Urges Community Action &amp; Highlights Resources<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Inside the 2026 NC Advocacy Day<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recent\u00a0media coverage\u00a0has revealed a\u00a0troubling trend of\u00a0<strong>murder-suicides\u00a0involving intimate partners and children.\u00a0<\/strong>The tragic\u00a0deaths\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/nation\/virginia-lt-gov-justin-fairfax-and-his-wife-are-dead-in-murder-suicide-police-say\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Cerina Fairfax<\/a>\u00a0y\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstoniamag.com\/eat-and-drink\/2026\/05\/thy-mitchell-houston-restaurateur-remembrance-travelers-table\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thy Mitchell<\/a>\u00a0are the\u00a0latest\u00a0victims befallen to\u00a0these tragedies.\u00a0Although facts are still being verified, many\u00a0of these fatal\u00a0cases\u00a0understood by scholars as \u201cfamilicides\u201d have\u00a0underlying links to\u00a0domestic violence\u00a0(DV).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hidden Reality Behind Familicide<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The loss of an entire family\u00a0deeply\u00a0impacts\u00a0the larger community but also\u00a0raises\u00a0questions about warning signs\u00a0for\u00a0those closest to the family.\u00a0\u00a0Often, a\u00a0thin\u00a0veil\u00a0of\u00a0manipulation, violence and control\u00a0secretly\u00a0encircles\u00a0the\u00a0intimate partner and\u00a0the\u00a0children.\u00a0In the aftermath\u00a0of familicide,\u00a0loved ones and\u00a0associates are\u00a0seldom\u00a0aware\u00a0of\u00a0those\u00a0tactics and behaviors, intensifying\u00a0the shock and disbelief\u00a0amongst\u00a0loved ones.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Recognizing Red Flags for Escalating Harm<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Increasing community awareness of red flags\u00a0for\u00a0escalating\u00a0harm from an abusive partner \u2013like murder-suicides\u2014is critical\u00a0to interrupting this trend. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some common red flags\u00a0may include:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Physical violence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Excessive jealousy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Threats of suicide or homicide<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recent relationship separation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Firearm\u00a0access<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Financial stressors.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Policy Matters<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notably, one fourth of homicides in the US\u202fare\u202fdomestic violence-related,\u202fand the presence of a\u202ffirearm\u202fin a DV situation increases the risk of homicide by 500%<sup>1. \u00a0\u00a0<\/sup>By\u00a0advocating for\u00a0policies that provide firearm protections for victims\/survivors of domestic violence, we can decrease the likelihood of domestic violence homicides.\u00a0Firearm restrictions and restored firearm safety measures can drastically reduce the risk of familicide.<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0 One of the ways to reduce this risk is by promoting policies such as paid family leave, family friendly\u00a0workplaces\u00a0and\u00a0SNAP\/TANF\u00a0benefits\u00a0which\u00a0help people have more stable incomes and better opportunities to improve their quality of life.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ending Familicide Is A Community Responsibility<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ending familicide is an individual and community responsibility.\u00a0At an individual level, each of us can exercise compassion, care, and vigilance in supporting survivors and share information related to increasing their safety.\u00a0Communities and\u00a0decision-makers\u00a0can also create meaningful change through policy advocacy that can result in a stable and widespread impact on many people.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Resources for Support &amp;
