Domestic Violence and Disasters
The stress and instability brought on by disasters often leave domestic violence survivors and their children more vulnerable to violence and domestic violence service providers in greater need of resources to assist them.
In the early days after Hurricane Helene, NCCADV quickly formed an internal disaster response team. We reached out to all the impacted domestic violence service providers and our community partners and created a document that detailed each programs’ status and concerns. We shared access to this document with state funders and other partners and we all enter updates on supplies and repairs needed and have real-time access to this information as we arrange supply deliveries and apply for funding.
NCCADV arranged for deliveries and loaded a U-haul and drove about $10,000 of supplies to western programs ourselves. We are currently applying for funding to meet the on-going needs in the west and we have created The SINCE Fund to cover the expenses that other funding cannot.
Did you know that disasters disproportionately impact survivors of domestic violence and the organizations that serve them?
Join the Response Team!
Domestic violence crisis response is largely funded by restricted grants, or grants awarded for a very narrowly approved purpose. To fill the SINCE Fund, NCCADV is working with partners all over the state to build a coalition of at-home supporters. When disaster strikes, NCCADV will sound the alarm so that our community can come together to fill the SINCE Fund and meet the special needs of survivors during that disaster.
Join the response team by making a donation to the SINCE fund and by sharing our social media posts with your friends and family.
About the SINCE Fund
Since we never know when a disaster may strike, since survivors have unique needs, since everyone knows someone who has experienced or witnessed domestic violence, since we are stronger together, NCCADV has created the SINCE fund.
In the wake of Hurricane Helene, The North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCCADV) has established the Survivors In North Carolina Emergency Fund (The SINCE Fund) to help meet the needs of survivors impacted by disasters. The SINCE Fund will provide financial assistance and supplies to local domestic violence service providers to respond to survivors’ immediate needs following disasters and will assist them in meeting the increased need for services that often follows a disaster. The SINCE Fund will save lives by allowing local domestic violence agencies to respond to survivors’ needs quickly.
