We are invested in keeping domestic violence survivors and their children safe while living in or seeking services from a domestic violence service provider. Through the Child Advocacy Services and Enhancement (CASE) Project, we are helping domestic violence service providers access criminal background checks in order to adequately screen employees, volunteers, and interns.
We know that accessing criminal background history enhances the selection process for current and prospective agency staff and complements traditional screening methods such as interviews and reference checks. Also conducting criminal background checks is recommended for keeping children safe from potential harm, in accordance to the Darkness to Light’s Stewards of Children, an evidence-based curriculum to prevent child sexual abuse (see Step 2: Minimize Opportunity).
NCCADV provides support to local domestic violence service providers by offering reimbursements for criminal background checks. Taking part in the reimbursement program also includes technical assistance on selecting a criminal background check vendor and requires compliance with record-keeping policies. The criminal background checks can include any number of individuals who will potentially interact with children at an agency including:
- Current employees;
- Potential hires and volunteers;
- Vendors contracted with an agency;
- College interns; and
- Members of the board of directors.
